Policy Guidelines

The RSG coordinates and publishes various general, taxon and species-specific re-introduction guidelines.

a. Re-introduction Guidelines
 
i. IUCN Position Statement on the Translocation of Living Organisms
This Position Statement is an initial attempt to describe, in detail, important translocation terms such as Introductions, Re-introduction, and Re-stocking. This was approved by the 22nd Meeting of the IUCN Council in Gland, Switzerland on 4th September, 1987.

ii. IUCN Guidelines for Re-introductions
This is a comprehensive set of policy guidelines that ensure that the re-introductions effectively achieve their intended conservation benefit, and do not cause unfavorable environmental side-effects. These guidelines were approved by the 41st Meeting of IUCN Council in May 1995. It was then translated into different languages that include French, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic and German and produced in a booklet form in 1998.

b. IUCN Guidelines for Confiscated Animals
 
 
i. IUCN Guidelines for the Placement of Confiscated Animals
These guidelines were formulated to address the placement of increasing numbers of animals being confiscated from illegal and irregular trade worldwide. It was approved by the 51st Meeting of IUCN Council in February 2000.

c. RSG Guidelines for Non-human Primate Re-introductions
This set of guidelines covers the main steps in the reintroduction of non-human primates. It is based on the existing framework of the IUCN Guidelines for Re-introductions with specific reference to primates.

d. IUCN/SSC AfESG Guidelines for the in situ Translocation of the African Elephant for Conservation Purposes
African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are being confronted by large-scale habitat loss and degradation and increasing incidents of human-elephant conflict. To address these issues, this set of guidelines was developed in conjunction with the African Elephant (AfESG), Re-introduction Specialist Group (RSG) and Veterinary Specialist Group (VSG) to provide a set of "best-practices" for translocating African elephants.

e. Guidelines for re-establishing grey partridge through releasing
In the UK, numbers of grey partridges have declined by over 80% during the last 25 years, and in many parts of the country the species has become locally extinct.These present guidelines provide specific advice to assist the recovery of the grey partridge where numbers have fallen below self-sustainable levels or where it no longer exists.

The guidelines for the Re-introduction of Galliformes for Conservation Purposes have been compiled by WPA and the IUCN/SSC Reintroduction Specialist Group and have just been published by WPA and IUCN.
